Cognition and tech: Final assessment

To complete this module, you should submit both of the assessments below.

First, you will see a critical thinking task about the study of the effect of online schooling on learning. You do not need to include any research for this response.  Simply write your thoughts and submit.

The second task is an essay.  For the essay prompt below, please complete the essay and then send the file to your teacher. You should verify with your teacher how the essay should be submitted - as a Google doc, by email, or as a written task in Inthinking.

A bit of practice

Task 1. Critical thinking about research

The Coronavirus has led to a natural experiment. Millions of students worldwide are now required to do their learning online as schools around the world have been shut down to prevent further infection. Some are saying that this will prove that online learning is superior to classroom learning.  Others are saying that online learning is ineffective in learning and that students are falling behind.

Your head of school asks if you think that we will be able to draw any conclusions from this natural experiment.  How would you reply?  What are the good things about this natural experiment?  What are the limitations of trying to draw conclusions?

Task 2. Writing an ERQ

Give yourself one hour to write a well-developed response to the following question:

To what extent are the effects of digital technology positive on one or more cognitive processes?

Writing tip

When writing a "to what extent" essay, it is important to show both sides of the argument - in other words, you will need at least one study that shows the positive effects and one that shows negative effects.  Think about how the research for positive and negative effects may be fundamentally different and what this may say about the effects of technology on cognition.
