ERQ marking: Brain imaging
Below you will find three sample ERQs for the question: Evaluate the use of one or more techniques used in the study of the brain and behaviour.
For each of the samples, refer to the rubric to award marks. After each sample, there is a predicted grade as well as feedback on the strengths and limitations of the sample.
Sample 1
One technique used by psychologists to study the brain is an MRI. This device requires a certain level of expertise to operate. They are also expensive. However, the technique is important in understanding brain activity and structure. Pixel counting and VBM can be used to measure the size of certain parts of the brain in an MRI. An MRI can tell us about the structure of the brain but can only indirectly tell us something about its function.
Magnetic Resonance Imaging is a non-invasive method of studying the brain. MRIs indicate the brain structure with high-resolution imaging. The study by Maguire et al was conducted using an MRI device. The aim was to investigate the function of the hippocampus in spatial memory by studying taxi drivers and non-taxi drivers. Two things were measured in the participants' brains: the grey matter was measured using VBM and the area of the hippocampus was measured using pixel counting. The participants gave full consent to being in the MRI. This is not because it poses a health risk, but because if the MRI found something wrong with the participant’s brain, the researchers conducting the experiment would be obligated to notify the participant. The MRI device indicates the structure of the brain, however, it cannot establish a clear cause and effect relation, therefore it is limited.
Another example of how an MRI was used can be seen a study done by Draganski. He wanted to see how the process of learning how to juggle could change the shape of one's brain. The study had two different groups. All were non-jugglers at the start. One group did not learn to juggle and served as a control group. A baseline scan was done for all participants. One group learned how to juggle. When they were scanned again three months later, there was evidence of significant neuroplasticity in the brain. In addition, when they stopped juggling - and then were scanned again three months later - their brains had returned to normal. This is called neural pruning. The MRI was used because the actual activity of the brain was not being measured - it was only the structure that was important. Once again, participants gave consent and had the right to withdraw. It is not clear, however, if they were debriefed at the end of the study.
MRIs have some limitations. A large one is that being placed inside the devices is not a natural environment for cognition, as it is an enclosed space with loud noises where movement is not permitted. In addition to lowering the ecological validity, it can also be anxiety-inducing for a participant which could change the way they respond to a stimulus. A limitation for the MRI is that on the actual brain scans, different levels of activity are shown in different colours. This can exaggerate our perception of the brain activity and make us think that there is more activity going on that there is in reality, and it is difficult to average levels of activity into different colours. A last limitation is that brain areas can activate for different reasons, which eliminates the possibility of establishing a cause and effect relationship between the variables of an experiment and the activity shown on the scans.

Critical thinking: Some evidence of critical thinking, but limited. Ethical comments are irrelevant to the question. In addition, the comment that it is unknown whether they were debriefed is not correct. Published modern psychological research must meet ethical standards. Minimal discussion of the use of the MRI in Maguire. Ecological validity and the effects of the technology on brain activity are not limitations of an MRI - only fMRI. Two techniques used to study the brain are magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) and functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI). MRIs use magnetic fields and radio waves to map the activity of hydrogen protons. Water molecules contain hydrogen protons and are present in brain tissue. MRIs create composite pictures of brain structures. The images can be viewed from any angle as a slice of the brain, or they can be used to create a three-dimensional image of the brain. Two possible ways to analyse MRIs are voxel-based morphometry (VBM) and pixel counting. VBM can be used to measure the density of grey matter and pixel counting can be used to calculate the area of certain brain structures. Unlike MRIs, which look purely at brain structure, fMRIs show actual brain activity and indicate which areas of the brain are active when engaged in a behaviour or cognitive process. fMRIs measure changes in blood flow as a measurement of brain activity. If a specific part of the brain is active, it requires more oxygen and thus blood flow to that part of the brain increases. fMRIs produce a film that demonstrates the changes in blood flow in the brain (and therefore also neural activity) during the period of the scan.
MRIs were used in a study by Maguire to look at whether the brain structure of London taxi drivers was somehow different as a result of their training and experience. The MRI scans of 16 right-handed male London taxi drivers were compared to the scans of 50 right-handed males who did not drive taxis, which were taken from an MRI database. All the taxi drivers had to have had their license for at least 1.5 years. The study was a single-blind study as the researcher did not know whether she was looking at the scan of a taxi driver or at a control. The density of the grey matter in the brain was measured using VBM and the area of the hippocampi was calculated using pixel counting. Maguire found that the posterior hippocampus of taxi drivers was significantly larger than the hippocampi of the controls taken from the MRI database. From the VBM, a correlation was found between the volume of the right posterior hippocampus and amount of time spent as a taxi driver. Maguire argued that this demonstrates that the structure of the hippocampus may change due to environmental demands.
The use of MRIs in Maguire’s study allowed her to find a correlation between hippocampus structure and environmental demands; however, there was no clear causation established. MRIs only indicate structure, they do not actually map what is happening in the brain. The non-invasive nature of MRIs means that there was minimal risk of the taxi drivers experiencing undue stress or harm. However, MRIs can still cause anxiety and stress in some people due to the loud sounds the machines make. The resulting images of MRIs have high resolution, which gives the researcher a good sense of the brain.
In a study by Harris & Fiske, fMRI scans were used to investigate the role of the limbic system in reacting to out-groups such as homeless people and addicts. 22 university students were divided into two groups. One group acted as a control and was shown pictures of objects while they were in an fMRI, whereas the other group was shown pictures of people. The participants were then put inside the scanner and were shown six sets of ten photographs. The photographs were of a range of people, from rich business people and Olympic athletes to people with disabilities and homeless people. The researchers found that there was a clear difference in brain activity when the participants rated pictures of people in their ‘extreme out-groups’; in addition to the activation of the amygdala, the insula gyrus which is associated with disgust, was activated. This may show that prejudice is more hardwired than we would like to believe.
The use of fMRIs is very expensive. For Harris & Fiske’s study, this meant that they were only able to have a small sample size. This means that the results may not be generalizable to a larger population and that more research should be done to see if the results are reliable. One of the strengths of the use of fMRIs in Harris & Fiske’s study is that fMRIs do not allow for demand characteristics, as people are not able to control their involuntary brain activity that occurs as a response to an image. However, brain areas do activate for various reasons and we cannot be certain that a person is experiencing disgust when certain parts of the brain light up. Like MRIs, fMRIs are also very loud and many people may feel claustrophobic when they are in the machine. The participants’ reactions to the noise or the claustrophobia may influence the brain activity seen on an fMRI scan. Despite this, fMRIs create high-resolution images that show brain activity over a period of time, which allowed Harris and Fiske investigate the reactions of people. This would not have been possible with an MRI because no change in brain structure occurred.
Both MRIs and fMRIs are useful techniques for studying the brain. They both are non-invasive and produce high-resolution images or film, however, it is important not to over-interpret the information they provide. Costs limit sample sizes making the reliability of much of the research questionable.

To evaluate the use of techniques to study the brain, there must be a discussion of the strengths and weaknesses of these techniques. The techniques I will discuss are brain scans using fMRI and MRI. Both methods use strong magnetic fields to take these scans.
A classic study carried out by Milner used an MRI to study the brain of HM - a famous patient with amnesia. HM had a biking accident as a child that meant he had epilepsy. To stop his seizures, he had a surgery which removed his hippocampus. To see which part of the brain was removed, Corkin carried out an MRI. She could see that it was, in fact, the hippocampus and part of the amygdala. This helped to confirm that the role of the hippocampus is to transfer short-term memory to long-term memory.
In Sharot’s study she used an fMRI in order to study emotional memories from a traumatic experience. The participants were in New York City during the 9/11 terrorist attack. To study the response of the amygdala Sharot had participants lie in the fMRI scan and flashed different words paired with either ‘September’ or ‘summer’ to see the response in the brain. The results found that people who where in New York but not near the attack had the same level of activation of the amygdala for both sets of words. Sharot also found that those who had been near the attack had much higher activation of the amygdala. From the fMRI scan the researchers were able to see that the amygdala seems to play a role in emotional memories and a large role in making of flashbulb memories. An fMRI cannot determine the function of the brain, but it can help the researchers know where the brain is activated during specific activities. This allows researchers to create theories about the functions of specific parts of the brain.
These techniques to study the brain can be very helpful to researchers in understanding functions of the brain. An fMRI allows researchers to see the blood flow to certain areas showing increased activity in these areas helping us to understand what parts of the brain function when. MRI’s are helpful for looking at differences in physical aspects of the brain. Some of the negative aspects of these techniques include an fMRI scan does not allow for correlational results and cannot explain the data collected from a study. MRI’s show no causation to the results and all results from this techniques can not determine the factor that created them.
The techniques of brain scans such as fMRI and MRI to study the brain are very useful techniques when studying the brain. These techniques allow for understanding of functions of the brain as well as understanding the difference in brain development. Therefore, brain scans are effective techniques to study the brain in psychology.
