Presentation: Contact hypothesis
The following presentation looks at research that supports and challenges the contact hypothesis with regard to globalization. As increased international travel and tourism is part of globalization, this research can be used to look at the positive and negative effects of globalization.
You are not expected to learn all of the material in this presentation. When using this study for revision, remember to:
- Learn 2 - 3 studies that you feel you understand. You may also, instead, learn studies from the textbook or from your teacher.
- Focus on key evaluation points
The presentation
Critical thinking
What are the reasons for the differences in the studies in this presentation? Why does it appear that in some cases, globalization has had a positive effect on tolerance levels - and yet in other cases, it appears to have a negative effect?
Notice that the two studies that have a positive effect were both done with samples of university samples. Remember that university students have a specific set of traits that may bias the sample: YAVIS - young, affluent, verbal, intelligent and social.
In addition, notice that the Czech and Slovak study included a voluntary behaviour - travel to the Muslim world. Meanwhile, the study on a country's level of globalization and rates of xenophobia is an involuntary action - that is, citizens of the country did not have the choice to allow their country to become more globalized. This means that the studies may not be contradictory - it may be that they are looking at very different aspects of globalization.
