Presentation: Cultural dimensions

The following presentation supports the study of cultural dimensions.  You need to know one cultural dimension for the exam.

You are not expected to learn all of the material in this presentation.  When using this study for revision, remember to:

  • Focus on key concepts
  • Learn 2 - 3 studies that you feel you understand.  You may also, instead, learn studies from the textbook or from your teacher.
  • Focus on key evaluation points

Evaluation of cultural dimensions

  • Hofstede used a rigorous research paradigm. His research was systematic and used a large cross-cultural sample.
  • The theory gives psychologists a coherent theory for classifying and discussing culture.
  • The theory can be used to explain a large range of behaviours.
  • The survey method is dependent on self-reported data.  This may have resulted in demand characteristics.  However, since the sample was so large, these may not play a significant role.
  • Sampling was taken from a tech company office environment.  The sample is therefore biased and may not be representative of a larger population.
  • The theory makes the assumption that cultures are to some extent homogenous.  It is actually difficult to operationalize what it means to be part of "Czech culture." The theory is based on trends within societies.
  • In a globalized world, this questions the validity of the research carried out a generation ago.
  • There is the danger of stereotyping individuals when using cultural dimensions to explain behaviour.
