EE Criterion D. Presentation

Criterion D focuses on the structure and layout of the essay.  The layout includes several factors, including the use of headings, citations and page numbers to assist the reader in navigating through the essay.

This criterion is worth 4 marks.

Assessment

Under criterion D, students are assessed on the following criteria:

  • The structure of the essay clearly is appropriate in terms of the expected conventions for the topic, the argument, and subject in which the essay is registered.
  • Layout considerations are present and applied correctly.
  • The structure and layout support the reading, understanding, and evaluation of the extended essay.

There are specific requirements for the submission of the EE online.  These include:

  • The use of an appropriate font (Arial is recommended)
  • Use of size 12 font
  • Double spacing
  • The use of headings to indicate introduction, key arguments, discussion, conclusion, and references.
  • The essay may not exceed 4000 words.

It is recommended that students do not include the following:

  • Subheadings
  • Footnotes used for citation - in-text citation is more the norm in psychology.  It does not matter if students use APA or MLA citation.

If information is relegated to a footnote, it is not read by the examiner.  Appendices should also not be included.  They are also not read by the examiner.

There is an important change in the new EE curriculum.  From the guide it reads:

If the referencing does not meet the minimum standard as indicated in the guide - that is, the name of the author, date of publication, the title of the source, and page numbers as applicable - and is not consistently applied, work will be considered as a case of possible academic misconduct.

This is a significant change in the approach to assessing citation. Citation is not assessed per se, but if the citation is missing, does not match the references listed, or does not meet the minimum standard as outlined above, the student jeopardizes getting their diploma.
