Animal research: Final assessment

To complete this module, you should submit both of the assessments below.

First, you will see a critical thinking task about a study by Li-Huei Tsai at MIT. Complete your thoughts on ethical considerations for the research and submit.

The second task is an essay.  For the essay prompt below, please complete the essay and then send the file to your teacher. You should verify with your teacher how the essay should be submitted - as a Google doc, by email or as a written task in Inthinking.

A bit of practice

Task 1. Critical thinking about research

Watch the following video on Alzheimer's research.  At around 3 minutes and 48 seconds into the video, you will see the research done at MIT university by Doctor Tsai.  Write a proposal to your university with the goal of replicating this study.  How will you make sure that ethical considerations are met?

50 lines

Task 2. Writing an ERQ

Give yourself one hour to write a well-developed response to the following question:

Discuss the value of animal models in the study of hormones and/or pheromones.

Writing tip

When writing the essay, it is important that you remember not just to evaluate the studies, but explain why animal models are used and why they are important in the study of hormones and/or pheromones. Starting off with an explanation of why animal models are used as part of the introduction or a "conceptual understanding" paragraph is a good idea.  Ending your essay with a discussion of the value of the model you have selected is an appropriate way to end the essay.
