India's fight for independence from British rule started in the mid 19th Century and ended in 1947 when the Indian Independence Bill came into force; it was hailed by Indian independence leader Mohatma Gandhi  as the “noblest act of the British nation'. However, the British creation of two states, India and Pakistan, was to lead to violence and war between the two countries and both faced daunting challenges in their first ten years of independence.
