The Polish government has recently passed a controversial law making it illegal to accuse Poland of complicity in Nazi Crimes.
Read the following article by The Economist magazine and discuss in pairs (or as a class) the following questions
What does this new Polish Law aim to achieve?
What challenges now exist re the work of historians with regard to Polish history?
What discussions in the international media have taken place about this law?
To what extent do all countries influence the history of their country for national purposes? What other examples can you find where this has been intiated directly by the government?
How does such political interference impact the exploration of 'historical truth'?
Can a historian's work be independent of his/her own culture and context?
Can you find an example of a country which has attempted to come to terms with a past involving human rights absues? How have they gone about this and what success have they had?
You may also wish to discuss the extent to which your own nation's history has been subjected to govenrment interference and also what you think should be taught in history lessons in schools.
