Question

A fluid sample is taken from the digestive tract of a mammal. The sample is basic (alkaline) and able to digest starch and proteins. From which part of the digestive tract was the fluid taken?

A. Mouth

B. Stomach

C. Small intestine

D. Gall bladder

Markscheme

C

Examiners report

Fewer than 60 % of candidates answered correctly. A teacher comment was made that the question was misleading and confusing, but the only required knowledge was that the lumen of the small intestine contains protein- and starch-digesting enzymes and is alkaline rather than acidic. Each of the distractors attracted substantial numbers of candidates. As they were mouth, stomach and gall bladder, digestion appears to be a relatively neglected part of the program.
