Question
Compare and contrast the nature of royal government in England and France.
Markscheme
Candidates will give an account of the similarities and differences in the nature of royal government in England and France during the period from 1066 to 1223. Candidates may elect to offer full period coverage or they may choose to focus on a narrower period. Should a narrow period be selected, it is likely that candidates’ focus will be on approximately the same period in both states, however, there is no specific demand for this is in the question and it may be possible for candidates to offer some valid, albeit non-contemporaneous, comparisons and contrasts. While the focus of the response will remain on the nature of royal government, candidates may address contributory factors such as the personal authority of the monarch, the wealth of both states and/or the problems that government faced.
